Hurricanes pose one of the greatest threats to Florida’s communities, and Baker County is no exception.
Hurricane Watch vs. Warning
A hurricane watch means that you could experience hurricane conditions within 36 hours. This watch should trigger your family’s disaster plan, and you should take protective measures, especially if those actions require extra time, such as securing a boat or leaving a barrier island.
A hurricane warning indicates that sustained winds of at least 74 mph are expected within 24 hours. Once this warning has been issued, your family should be completing protective actions and deciding the safest location to be in during the storm.
Hurricane Season is June 1 – November 30
Take necessary measures to ensure your family’s safety well in advance of hurricane season.
Develop a Family Disaster Plan
- Assemble a disaster supply kit.
- Find the most convenient and safe evacuation route and the location of emergency shelters.
- Keep emergency numbers readily available for all family members.
- Make sure your first aid kit is well stocked.
- Designate two contacts: one local and one out-of-town. Teach children how to call these contacts, and help them memorize the names and numbers of your emergency contacts.
- Have a plan for your pets.
- Decide whether you should evacuate or stay at home during the storm. You must evacuate if you are ordered. If you must work during the storm, make arrangements for your family before reporting to work.
